Breastfeeding and your baby
Breastfeeding is the best source of nourishment for infants and young children, helping them thrive during early development. The first three years of a baby’s life is the foundation of lifelong development. Breast milk provides the perfect balance of electrolytes, fats and nutrients that a baby needs in order to grow healthy and strong.*
Not only is breastfeeding the best way to ensure that your baby gets the vitamins and minerals it needs, but it is also a great way for you to bond with your new baby. The first few months will be a time of growth and discovery for both mother and baby. Each mother and baby is different, so while it is good to listen to advice from other mothers, you will need to give yourself time to settle into your own routine with your baby, especially if you will be breastfeeding for the first time.
Although breastfeeding is a natural process, it doesn't necessarily mean it's always simple to establish a breastfeeding routine. Don't hesitate to contact your healthcare provider if you need help or support.
If parents are able to establish healthy nutritional patterns from conception, through pregnancy and breastfeeding, at weaning and toddlerhood, it can help prevent chronic health conditions and improve overall well-being.
*HIV positive mothers should always consult a health care practitioner to advise on best practices when nurturing a newborn, as there is a slight risk of transmission during breastfeeding.
